| Other Info | We have been invited as a guest DJ to support the evening. Sydney band MA and Kino Filmmakers mash up their talents for a unique creative project What it's about It could only happen in this digital age - Sydney band MA, underground film collective KINO and a host of local and international DJs have joined forces in a unique project that embraces new ways of collaborative mischief-making. The Kino Love MA/Across the City and Into your REMIX project enables all participants the opportunity to "play" and engage with media they wouldn't normally have easy access to: for MA the opportunity to have their music interpreted by DJs and opened up to new audiences (much like Everything But the Girl and Todd Terry's remix of Missing); for the DJs involved, the opportunity to work (legally) with high quality samples and stems of original music; and for the film makers an opportunity to use original music under a creative commons license and to have their films pushed online by MA and the DJ's involved to promote the project. A not-for-profit project ultimately about free collaboration, the final mastered tracks will be launched on the 8th of March and then made available for free download from MA's bandcamp site. The launch will feature a live performance by MA, DJ sets by some of the remixers, art installations by Punk Monk, and a special screening of the videos made for the remixes by members of Kino Sydney as part of Kino 34. Announced at Kino 33 on February 1, filmmakers were challenged to download tracks from MA's bandcamp site and make a video for whichever one inspires them the most. The videos will be shown on the 8th of March at Fraser Studios as part of Kino 34. About the participants MA’s critically acclaimed debut Across the City and Into Your Room was described at the time of its release as “highly textured, lush” and “beautifully crafted” –4 stars SMH and 5 stars TIME OUT in other words a dream for any DJ or producer who wants to work with great original music. So Drew and Victoria put together a project that would see their album reinterpreted with the 'Across the City and into Your REMIX' project. They found - and were found by various musicians, DJs and producers from around Australia and overseas. The idea was simple: collaboration with no limitations on what could be done, no guidelines and the result has been phenomenal, surprising and in some cases truly inspiring. Now MA have connected with Kino to add another level to the project THE MUSIC VIDEO. Kino's motto is "shoot first, ask questions later", encouraging participants to learn about the craft of filmmaking by going out there and making films, unshackled by the burden of resources, time and money. Kino Sydney provides filmmakers of all skill-sets, backgrounds and experience levels with a support network to write, shoot and edit their projects as well as an opportunity to show the work to a large audience. Like an open-mic night for filmmakers, Kino is a place to network, meet cast and crew and enjoy great films. Everyone is encouraged to participate and given the means to do so, effectively blurring the boundaries between film makers and film watchers. Kino Sydney is a non-competitive, inclusive and accessible series of events which attracts close to 3,000 participants each year. To see their guidelines for the MA REMIX PROJECT click here. "Embracing common licensing encourages genuine creative expression. With modern attention spans and energies stretched thinly like never before, the opportunity to harness the pooled talents of so many creative individuals on a single, multi-faceted project is irresistible: the centre of gravity generated by this kind of open-source artistic collaboration is crucial to engage new audiences and build new creative communities while the traditional media distributors (record companies, movie theatres) collapse like dinosaurs around us."
